New Ulm is small enough to connect in a day and layered enough not to rush. Start with the museum and downtown, then make one deliberate choice between the brewery, monument, and state park.
Allow 15 to 20 minutes for a programmed performance and the rotating figures. The bells play several times daily, with fewer performances from November through March, so check the current schedule before choosing an arrival time.
Allow 60 to 90 minutes for exhibits on immigration, settlement, the U.S.–Dakota War of 1862, and the community that followed. The museum currently opens Tuesday through Saturday, making it the best first stop on a Saturday heritage route rather than a Sunday fallback.
Give Minnesota Street, the Glockenspiel, and German Park about an hour on foot. The park is a useful family choice for its paths, fountain, open lawn, and playground; summer concerts make it an evening destination rather than merely a pass-through stop.
A public brewery tour lasts about 90 minutes, goes outdoors, and includes multiple flights of stairs. Same-day tour tickets are first-come, first-served; visitors who prefer a shorter or step-free stop should compare the current Bierhalle, garden, and museum access before leaving downtown.
The hilltop monument is currently closed to interior access, so this is a brief exterior stop rather than a climb. View it from outside the fence and use the grounds to understand New Ulm's position above the Minnesota River valley.
Use the mostly flat half-mile Pool and Woodland loop for a short visit, or add the 0.7-mile one-way Cottonwood Trail along the floodplain forest. A Minnesota state-park vehicle permit is required; check Department of Natural Resources alerts, fire restrictions, and seasonal trail conditions before driving over.
The childhood home of the New Ulm artist and author of Millions of Cats rewards readers, illustrators, and house-history visitors. Docent tours take about 45 minutes; regular hours are limited to summer and early-fall weekends, with year-round visits available by appointment.
Choose State Street for a scheduled performance, not as a guaranteed drop-in attraction. The renovated 1938 Art Deco theater grew from a Works Progress Administration addition to the former high school; check its event calendar or contact the theater before expecting interior access.
Visit the history museum, walk to the Glockenspiel and German Park, and eat downtown. View Hermann Monument from outside its fence if the hilltop setting matters more than brewery history; choose Schell's instead when its visitor hours align.
